The Evolution of Lighting

It all began in 1879 when Thomas Edison invented the carbon filament lamp, his greatest contribution to the future of electric light. Edison’s discovery would be the backbone of GE Lighting, the company he would later found.

The invention of the electric light bulb was announced in the New York Herald on Dec. 31, 1879. “I have accomplished all I promised,” said Edison to a reporter. The understatement of the century.

In the coming weeks, gas stock plummeted and stock in the Edison Electric Company sky-rocketed, leveling out at an astounding $3,500 a share.

By 1880, light bulbs went on sale, revolutionizing the future of electric light.

On April 15, 1892, The General Electric Company was born when the Edison Electric Company and the ThoGE Lightingmas Houston Company merged. Within just a year, the company employed over 10,000 people and realized a staggering $20 million in sales.

In 1907, the GE logo became commonplace on lamps and electrical appliances alike.
