With the holidays just around the corner, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. Whether you’re braving the jam-packed mall or powering through piles of work, the holidays are a hectic time. But are you missing the point of it all?

For many of us, the holidays are a time to enjoy family, celebration, tradition, rest, and eating a whole lotta delicious food. (Get your elastic-waisted pants ready, folks.) But do we take these luxuries and freedoms for granted?

Our veterans made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure freedom, security, and dignity for all. This holiday, we should take a moment to remember those who fought for our freedom. Because honoring our brave veterans should go beyond Memorial and Veteran’s Day.

Soldiers fight for our country, but above all else, they want to come home. What will be waiting for them there? Will everything have changed by the time they get back? Will finding work be full of hardship or opportunity? Military men and women have the right stuff. Hiring them is not only patriotic, but it’s smart business sense.

Why Veterans Make Great Employees

After they hang up their uniform, one of the biggest challenges veterans face is finding a job. According to CNN, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, about 77 percent of veterans have struggled through unemployment. In fact, more than 25 percent have searched for a job for more than a year.

With all they’ve done for our great country—and all the skills and specialized training under their belts—there’s no reason to pass up on hiring veterans. Show-Me Heroes, a cooperative effort between the Missouri Army National Guard and the Missouri Division of Workforce Development, reminds us that military men and women possess many sought-after skills, including:

  • Engineering
  • Road Building
  • Computer Networking
  • Satellite Communications

Those practical skills come with many desirable professional attributes, such as:

  • Leadership skills
  • Understanding of hierarchical structures
  • Ability to perform under pressure
  • Advanced teamwork skills
  • Respect for procedures and superiors
  • Integrity, dedication, and strong work ethic
  • A keen understanding of technology

Graybar Hires Veterans

To honor military men and women, Graybar actively recruits and hires veterans through the Show-Me Heroes program. We’re proud to say we’ve been awarded a Flag of Freedom Award in recognition of these efforts.

The Show-Me Heroes program, which showcases Missouri businesses that are willing and eager to hire veterans, connects veterans with jobs when they return home from service. Every employer signs a pledge to scale up efforts to recruit and interview veterans for job openings.

We’re proud to participate in this program, receive this recognition, and support veterans in building successful careers. Because without brave military men and women, our country wouldn’t be what it is today.
